The Via Augusta | By Joan Tapia

Mobility is a problem and traffic reduction is the great pending subject. It must be approved with studies, consensus and public transport, not with precipitation and ideological binge that divide and damage citizen morality.

That is why the reform of Via Laietana -which accumulates months of works and blocks access to the center from the sea- and those of some streets of the Eixample generate so much controversy. how does it help reduce pollution pedestrianize Council of Cent If the cars will have no other option than to recharge Valencia, Roselló and even the Gran Via? And it affects not only Barcelonans but also quite a few inhabitants of Greater Barcelona (almost 5 million) who come to the capital -sometimes for daily work.

Now a new front has been opened with the Via Augusta bike lane, for the moment only in the direction of the center up to Plaza de Molina, which reduces by 33% the space available to the 30,000 cars that circulate every day, many from Vallès and Bages, and that they have been for about three weeks with a blockage higher than the previous one that makes it very difficult to circulate -also for the residents of the area- up to, at least, the Ronda del Mig.

Has the risk of those who have to get on the buses crossing the bike lane been foreseen? Is it logical not to take into account that the upper part of Via Augusta is not just an urban road but the forced access of many vehicles that enter the city? And that the start will also be complicated when -horror!- the lane is also implanted in the mountain part.

It would be helpful if the mayoral candidates would speak up and take a stand. The devil is in the details. What is the use of theorizing about Greater Barcelona if one of the main access roads is treated as if it were Carrer de Aribau?
