Australian TV commentator David Basheer has received harsh criticism for his statements on the opening day of the World Cup.

Basheer was in the commentary booth when hosts Australia defeated Ireland 1–0.

When the 75,000-strong audience and the amazing atmosphere of the event were admired in the broadcast after the match, the 57-year-old commentator roared a special view of Australia’s Katrina Gorry, who was picked up for the TV cameras.

– That smile says it all, Basheer began.

– Becoming a mother clearly hasn’t taken away her competitive spirit. He is a real fighter for his team, the man shook the Australian of News.au by.

Social media immediately seized on Basheer’s thoughtless statement.

– Why on earth would having a child affect a woman’s motivation in sports? You would never say the same to an athletic father, PhD in communications Victoria Fielding wrote.

– Oh my God. I thought men were over these ridiculous narratives by now,” another Twitter user scoffed.

Katrina Gorry, 30, had a baby girl in 2021. She returned to the national team in April 2022. Gorry is engaged to Swedish player Clara Markstedt, 33.
