The match, which lasted 15 minutes, finally ended with the unanimous decision of the judges in favor of Heini. At the time, Dober refused to accept his defeat, but thanks to the match, life took a surprising turn.
Dober went to spend the evening in Berlin for a post-match party at Hein’s place, where he met his sister Gloria’s. There was an immediate connection between the two and soon they started dating. Eventually, Drew and Gloria got married.
– It was absolutely incredible. He won the match, but I won the war. I never would have thought that one loss could lead to the biggest win of my life, Dober says on the Against the Fence podcast Sportbible by.
Although one might imagine that Nick would have a negative attitude towards the relationship, Dober says that the German was immediately sympathetic.
– He noticed how well we got along and even suggested that I could be his brother-in-law that same evening, Dober recalls.
Dober is an American freestyle fighter currently boxing in the UFC lightweight division. He has been boxing professionally since 2009 and has also previously competed in Bellator MMA and Titan Fighting Championship.
