The renovation of the Berlin schools is making progress. The state secretary for school construction was a good idea, says BZ editor Hildburg Bruns Photo: Olaf Selchow

Foundation stones are laid, topping-out crowns raised, openings celebrated. The school building offensive is going like hot cakes right now.

Luckily, all future seventh graders could also be assigned a specific place for the coming school year – unlike the year before, when the school authorities initially sent out 200 notifications without a specific assignment.

But let’s not fool ourselves: In a number of districts, such as Mitte and Pankow, children have to travel a long way to school in neighboring districts because all capacities within their own area are exhausted.

Nevertheless, it seems to have paid off that the CDU/SPD coalition has appointed its own state secretary for school building for this task. Someone who is knowledgeable, ambitious and responsive to the districts.
