The “League match in the USA” plan, which has been the subject of discussion in La Liga for weeks, has been suspended. The match between Villarreal and Barcelona, which was planned to be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20, approved by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and UEFA, was postponed.
According to The Athletic, the company responsible for the organization had to move the match to a later date, stating that the preparation time was insufficient.
La Liga management has been keeping this project on the agenda for a long time in order to expand Spanish football in the global market. However, players, fan groups and some clubs reacted harshly to the decision, arguing that “moving local competition beyond the borders” would harm the spirit of the league.
