The Netherlands imports less from China, especially fewer computers | Economy

Dutch imports from China are decreasing. According to Statistics Netherlands (CBS), fewer computers and telephones are coming this way. The import value of individual chips is increasing.

From January to July, the Netherlands imported almost 70 billion euros worth of goods from China. That was almost 5 billion euros less than in the same period a year earlier. Last year, the import value of goods from China clearly increased. According to the statistics office, this was largely a result of price increases.

Until not so long ago, China’s importance as a country to import from continued to increase. China’s share in total goods imports even exceeded 10 percent for the first time in 2020, when the transit of products via the Netherlands to other countries is not included. But in 2022, this share had already fallen again to 9 percent.

The European Union as a whole also imported less from China in the first seven months of this year. This is mainly because Germany, where the industry is going through a difficult period, purchases fewer Chinese products. Germany was the largest importer of goods from China within the EU last year, looking at the first seven months. This year it is the Netherlands, despite the aforementioned decrease in imports.

Dutch exports of goods to China will increase this year, according to the available data up to and including July. According to Statistics Netherlands, this amounts to 11.8 billion euros, or 16 percent more than in the same period last year. This mainly concerns machines, medicines and medicinal and pharmaceutical products.
