During the day nothing pointed to danger. The red-yellow flag fluttered, which means that swimming is safe. “The circumstances were good. It was sunny, it was also busy on the beach,” says Brinkman. “The currents were no different than usual, but these five ended up in a mui in an unfortunate way and thus driven away.”
Same experience earlier that day
NH reporter and born Texelaar Ron Flens noticed the same place earlier that day in the same place. On Sunday morning he suddenly felt a strong current during a short splash in the sea.
“I didn’t realize that it was a mui, I think that’s just a strong current.” Flens panicked and considered calling the rescue brigade, but managed to reach the beach on its own.
“Then you do all the things wrong, while you know what to do with a mui. I wanted to go back to the beach, but you shouldn’t do that because then you get tired.”
