THETHE MONSTER
Type: Italian thriller

The darkest and most disturbing news case in recent history returns to spread anguish on the screen: the story of the “monster of Florence”, the mysterious serial killer who killed eight couples of lovers and engaged couples between 1968 and 1985.

The Netflix series The monsterdirected by Stefano Sollima and written by Leonardo Fasoli (practically the best that our seriality can offer), reconstructs the events following an original approach: not the news, but the fresco of the Italian province of the 70s and 80swith tensions, paranoia and ancient ties with ancestral traditions.

Francesca Olia is Barbara Locci in “The Monster” (© Netflix).

When two boyfriends were found murdered in a car in June 1982, investigators and public opinion turned to the serial killer terrorizing the Florentine countryside. At this point begins a journey backwards that leads to a murder in 1968, not yet considered the work of the “monster”, and from there even further back, to the beginning of the 1960s, when a Sardinian couple moved to Tuscany: it was in that environment that the murder of Barbara Locci and her lover took place.

The monster makes Locci the red thread of a narrative which does not focus on faithful reconstruction, but on the social and cultural substratum of a frightened, backward Italy, poised between patriarchy and emancipation.

For those who love thrillers inspired by the mysteries of our history.
