The Lemon Twigs: “Everything Harmony” (Review & Stream)

Parents are probably to blame. It’s easy to leave old Supertramp and Simon & Garfunkel records unattended in the living room. And it certainly wasn’t wise to keep the bell bottoms and tank tops from the seventies for so long. Kids like to dress up. Nevertheless: What Brian and Michael D’Addario are doing on their fourth album has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the present.

Meanwhile, the Lemon Twigs’ soft rock noise is getting on my nerves

Of course, the feeling of being born much too late runs through the career of the two former child stars and ex-musical actors from the very beginning. Her craftsmanship and talent have been admired on American late-night shows. The boys were just fifteen and seventeen when they recorded their debut, Do Hollywood (2016). Almost another case for the blissful “Mini Playback Show”.

But now the soft rock noise of the Lemon Twigs is getting on my nerves. Her hairstyles, outfits and poses look like they have just been fished out of the time tunnel. Each song sounds like the band put it together from a retro kit: “I wasn’t only born to be lonely/ I need a new love to keep me alive,” the brothers sing in heavenly on “Born To Be Lonely.” perfect harmonies, surrounded by a bombastic arrangement. So sad, so beautifully cheesy. Made for an audience that likes to pull out a lighter at concerts and swing their arms back and forth above their heads.

“Ghost Run Free” is a bad copy of the La’s “There She Goes”, the Rickenbacker always at the ready and so free as a byrd: “Somebody’s waiting for me, trapped in the places that I can’t see.” You can like that, some people also go to concerts by cover bands. But when these album-length songs hit you, it quickly becomes unbearable. Too many autumn leaves swirling through the air to describe a melancholic mood. Some irony and humor like 10cc might help.
