Electric sliding doors, adaptive suspension, and a range of 1,105 kilometers: the BYD Linghui M9 brings luxury to the road. Inside the cockpit, powerful Huawei technology awaits.
- BYD launches a seven-seater minivan in China for approximately 24,000 euros.
- The Linghui M9 has been specifically developed for taxi companies, ride services, and businesses.
- At 5.20 meters in length, the new BYD minivan is even larger than a Mercedes V-Class.
For about 24,000 euros, you can get a 5.20-meter-long minivan with seven seats, electric sliding doors, and even a massage function. This is the package BYD is now bringing to the market in China. However, the low price has a reason: the vehicle is not primarily aimed at families but rather at taxi companies, ride services, and businesses that transport many people daily. Still, the M9 demonstrates how much vehicle BYD can offer for relatively little money.
The model belongs to BYD’s newly established brand Linghui, which was introduced earlier this year. Instead of selling all vehicles under the well-known BYD name, the manufacturer is now separating its offerings for private and business customers. The new Linghui models, according to the industry portal CarNewsChina, are specifically designed for heavy-duty use as taxis, shuttles, or company vehicles and showcase that BYD is no longer just about extremely affordable cars.
Bigger than a Mercedes V-Class
The key selling point is the interior: BYD promises ample space for passengers and luggage. At 5.20 meters long, the minivan is even slightly larger than a Mercedes V-Class and competes in a similar size range as a VW Multivan. Up to seven people can accommodate comfortably inside. Thanks to electric sliding doors, entering and exiting tight parking spaces should be significantly easier than with traditional doors. Additionally, two large individual seats in the second row are designed to enhance comfort on long journeys.
The minivan’s features are equally impressive. Even the base version comes equipped with a large touchscreen and a digital cockpit. Higher trims include heated, ventilated, and even massaging seats in the first and second rows, up to twelve speakers, and folding tables for passengers. The infotainment system also supports Huawei HiCar, allowing Huawei smartphones to connect seamlessly, akin to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Up to 1,105 Kilometers Without Refueling
In terms of drive, BYD employs its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology, similar to the Dolphin model available for pre-order in Germany. A 147 hp turbo gasoline engine collaborates with a 268 hp electric motor. The vehicle is capable of about 118 kilometers on electric power alone, sufficient for many city trips without burning any fuel. When the battery runs low, the combustion engine takes over, offering a combined range of up to 1,105 kilometers when paired with a 50-liter tank.
Depending on the trim, the Linghui M9 is priced between 188,800 and 199,800 Yuan, which translates to approximately 24,300 to 25,800 euros. For a minivan over five meters long, comparable to a Mercedes V-Class and loaded with advanced technology, this price point is exceptionally low. Those anticipating compromises at this price may be surprised on paper. Depending on the configuration, the suspension can even automatically adjust to road conditions and smooth out imperfections.
This minivan could present a great opportunity for taxi companies or ride services like Uber or Free Now. The low purchase price reduces acquisition costs, while its up to 118 kilometers of electric range saves fuel in urban areas, and the spacious interior accommodates passengers and luggage efficiently. Should the Linghui M9 make its way to Europe, it may be priced significantly higher than the roughly 24,000 euros due to tariffs, transportation costs, and stricter regulations. For those still looking for an economical route into modern electric vehicles, the Skoda Elroq might be a worthwhile alternative.
