The hottest summer: the plot

We are a town in southern Sicily, in a very hot summer. Here he lives Lucia (Nicole Damiani), eighteen years old who takes care of the parish summer center with an unusual alpaca farm and who plans to go to Rome to the University, separating from her best friend Valentina (Alice Angelica). To throw havoc in the quiet village and in the life of the community is Nicola, a very charming aspiring priest who arrives in the small parish of the village managed by Don Carlo (Nino Frassica).

Nicola has all the qualities: he’s beautiful, good-natured, intelligent, courageous. Of course, many women in the village like him (“but you remember it Thornbirds?”, says one, eating it with her eyes). In particular, Valentina (“the oldest virgin in the village”, her words) loses her head over him. She immediately falls in love with the “parrino” and, determined to change course, she tries to seduce him, but without success.

The hottest summer: interpreters and review

Filmed between Rome and the Ragusa area, The hottest summer is the film directed by the young director Matteo Pilati, already known for Singular feminine. But above all it marks the debut of Nicole Damiani (Lucia) and Alice Angelica (Valentina), two fresh and pretty young actresses who interpret their characters very well. It adds to them Gianmarco Saurino (Nicola) already seen in the series Doc In your hands and in Pilati’s film Singular feminine. He is perfect in the part of the very charming priest. It goes without saying that two seasoned professionals stand out above all: Stephanie Sandrelli (it’s Carmen, a devout parishioner, addicted to gossip and cigarettes, e Nino Frassica (Don Carlo, the wise and drug addicted village parish priest.

Small part also for Michela Giraud, who is Damiana, Nicola’s sister, under house arrest at her father Rodolfo’s house. NoThe film also stars Giuseppe Giofrè, a former judge dancer Friends: he is Damiana’s boyfriend.

Among the music, some summer “classics”, and an original piece by Francesca Michielin, Lightning strikes. It’s a pity that two or three very obvious minutes pass under the notes of the song: he and she kissing, he running on the beach against the light shirtless, he and she making love, he still running, he and she they embrace, life in the parish, him running… In fact, in some passages the film tends to fall into banality, but it remains an enjoyable comedy, for an evening of uncertain weather or to remember the summer, when the first storms arrive.

The director Pilati: I drew liberally from my experience

«It was a film of many “firsts” for me: the first time with a hundred extras, the first time with a large group of minors, the first time with a herd of alpacas, the first time with special effects (no spoiler), the first time with a drone available», said the director Matteo Pilati.

«Although there are no direct autobiographical references, I drew liberally from my experience: like the protagonists of the film, I too – during my adolescence – participated in the activities of the parish in my town, including the summer camp. However, I believe that many – not just my friends of the time – will recognize the situations and dynamics told in the film, especially those who grew up in the provinces, not necessarily in beautiful Sicily».
