Burnt-out trucks, crates of unused ammunition and an abandoned command center where Russian officers worked on school benches: these are some of the things CNN reporter Sam Kiley finds in Izium, Ukraine.

Kiley is the first international correspondent to visit the liberated city, about 125 km southeast of Kharkiv. A few days ago, the area was still occupied by Russian forces, but the Ukrainian army is advancing at an unusually fast pace.

The Russians behaved like pigs and stole everything they could from the empty houses, one resident testified. The man also tells how his neighbors’ houses were bombed, allegedly by the Ukrainians. But since the Russian storage depots and checkpoints were not hit, the man suspects that it was the Russians themselves who fired on civilian targets and tried to put the blame on the opponent.

During their retreat, the soldiers left behind a remarkable amount of military equipment, which the Ukrainians were only too happy to use. Kiley films, among other things, how Ukrainian soldiers tow away an abandoned Russian Howitzer tank and drive around with captured Russian vehicles.
