Rudi Völler’s Uncertain Future After the World Cup
Rudi Völler, the sporting director for the German Football Association (DFB), recently found himself contemplating resignation following the disappointing outcome of the national team at the World Cup. “I considered whether it makes any sense to continue after this World Cup, and I was wavering. I was very close,” the 66-year-old disclosed at the International Coaching Congress in Mainz.
This turmoil manifested in the wake of Germany’s underwhelming performance at the World Cup, which led many—Völler included—to question the future of the team and his role within it. However, following discussions with the DFB’s leadership and new head coach Jürgen Klopp, Völler decided to continue his contract until the European Championship in 2028. “Jürgen has an impressive track record. When he says you should stick around, I’m naturally happy about that. I will support him in my own way,” Völler remarked.

One of Völler’s primary concerns going forward is the need for the team to play a more attractive style of football. He stated, “We need to engage the masses again and perform better at the next European Championship.” For this mission, he believes Klopp is the right man. “You need to give people some confidence over the next two years. He has that ability; he has already ignited the country,” Völler said.
This sentiment reflects a shared hope for rejuvenation and vigor within the team under Klopp’s guidance. Völler expressed optimism about their collaboration, stating, “It’s fantastic that he has taken the role.” He praised Klopp’s exceptional talent for inspiring those around him, contrasting this with the challenges faced by Klopp’s predecessor, Julian Nagelsmann, who reportedly lacked support during his tenure.

Völler anticipates that Klopp’s approach will differ significantly; he is confident that Klopp can explore new tactics without fear of harsh critique. “He has the weight and sway to experiment a bit. He has earned the right to have a bit of leeway when things don’t go perfectly,” Völler noted.
This confidence in Klopp also stems from the belief that the German national team still has the potential to compete at the highest levels. “We are still a nation that can defeat anyone on a good day,” he emphasized.
Klopp’s Absence at the Coaching Congress
In an interesting twist, Klopp was scheduled to attend the Coaching Congress but chose to cancel, expressing, “I do not want to create headlines right at the start without having played a single match with the team. So I thought it makes sense not to discuss what I wanted to talk about.” He was set to deliver the opening speech on the topic: “Becoming a coach is not hard; being a coach is.”
In his video message, Klopp conveyed a commitment to concentrate on proving himself in his new role rather than draw attention prematurely. As he reflected, “If I think about talking about my career and my experiences, that could backfire in the coming days and weeks. Now that I am a coach, it was already hard enough. But now I need to show that I can stay in this role. That’s where my focus lies.”
