The EU’s new cosmetics ban will affect beauty entrepreneurs, as many do not have time to use the products they have acquired.

The European Union (EU) prohibits September 1 trimethylbenzoyl diphentylphine oxiden use in cosmetics. The substance is known as TPO and has been used especially in gel nail polishes.

The substance is classified as hazardous for reproduction. Its use has been regulated in the EU before, and only professionals have been used to use it.

In addition to TPO, the EU also prohibits another substance used in nail products in the same regulation: dimimethyltolylmic. This substance is classified as carcinogenic.

The European Commission is telling on their website It has received numerous queries from the recent regulation, as the ban on the ban is tight, especially for small entrepreneurs. The Commission issued a decree on May 12, and the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) announced it after mid-June.

Lake Natalia “Natte” Kusnezov has taken information about the prohibition on dismay. He has made claws for over ten years, of which the last two years are professionally entrepreneurial.

“I think this only a couple of months of transition is ridiculous given that we have been using these products for years,” says Kusnezov.

Kusnezov says he understands the ban on TPO, but he would like either a year’s transition or time so that existing products would be completed.

– Otherwise, this is really unreasonable, as most of us nail artists employ themselves under the business name. Few of us are paid.

Such financial losses for a ban will

Kusnezov says he has recently gone through the ingredients of his gel strikes in a sweat hat. He owns 250 different colored gel polishes. There are only about 10-15 of these in September. In addition, TPO is found in Kusnezov’s owner and outer strikes.

Kusnezov estimates that he will lose about € 2,500 worth of products.

– That’s a lot of it in the jacket. A small entrepreneur when it is, it’s a damn big money.

The Beauty Room Valentina also has a financial loss for a few hundred euros per office, says CEO Kristiina Nironen. The company has three offices and is located in Hämeenlinna, Järvenpää and Lahti.

– It’s a loss, that is, economically. But this is business, such things come up, says Nironen.

However, Nironen says he has a good deal of prohibition, and he thinks it is appropriate. In particular, it protects the health of nail designers because they are more exposed to product ingredients than customers.

Instead, according to Nironen, headaches are caused by the fact that a company can trust. According to him, only one of the importers has clearly communicated how and when products containing TPO will be replaced.

– From the employer’s point of view as an entrepreneur, it is shit when we can’t know who we can fully trust. That who will surely replace the products with ingredients that do not have TPO. If it is forbidden by law, I think it is useless to put it.

“Unpopular opinion”

According to both Kusnezov and Nironen, the ban on TPO has sparked a lot of discussion among beauty professionals. For some, it is still unclear what the prohibition means in practice. Some have said that they have received conflicting information from Tukes.

– I would like a really clear output from Tukes. I also look forward to how these TPO products should be destroyed if there is no transitional time, says Kusnezov.

Iltalehti asked Tukes for an interview on the subject, but Tukes did not comment, but said that he would announce this this week and only then answer the questions.

The European Commission’s website states that beauty professionals may no longer use TPO -containing products in their customer work after the beginning of September. Also, products containing TPO must no longer be sold.

Natalia Kusnezov plans to continue working in September with a limited range of colors. He will not immediately get rid of all his gel nail polishes, but still wait for some extension of the transition.

– I have to do it. First of all, I think I have primer products and outer gels such that the operation continues as if normal in September. Then little by little I got more colors.

Kristiina Nironen, Valentina’s Beauty Room, says that the company destroys all products containing TPO at the turn of the month. According to him, they have enough gel polishes in the range without TPO, so nail work will continue in the fall normally.

– I have an unpopular opinion because I think if it is forbidden, why no one would like to continue with it.
