Juha Kallio, one of the organizers of the Imatra races, reminds drivers that they accept the risk of death every time they put on their helmets.

The future of the Imatran races is not at stake, despite the tragedy seen over the weekend.

This is what one of the organizers of the Imatranajoe assures Juha Kallio.

The former racing driver is naturally sad By Joey den Besten of fate. The 30-year-old Dutchman died in an accident on Sunday, when he fell on the familiarization lap before the competition. Den Besten slid into a light pole with fatal consequences.

– These are always unpleasant things. Every death is always pointless, says Kallio.

The harsh truth is that the general public only gets interested in street racing when the driver dies. That is proven by the coverage of, for example, the big race of the sport, the days of the Isles of Man.

After the tragedy, the discussion about the danger of racing starts. It upsets Kallio.

– It’s a common joke among sports people that the media is only interested in us when someone dies. The competitions themselves and the results don’t seem interesting, Kallio criticizes.

Lajiväki does not speculate on the danger of the race. They understand and accept that danger is part of the sport.

– You can have a bad time with ice cream, Kallio describes.

– Every driver is aware of and accepts the risks.

Kallio does not consider Imatranaja to be particularly dangerous.

– All races in the IRRC series are street track races similar to Imatranajot. I would dare to say that Imatranajajo is from the safest end. For example, many tracks do not have proper safety areas, says Kallio.

Familiar guy

The late Den Besten was a familiar driver to Kallio.

– We used to race together. We always greeted each other when we met.

Den Besten won the IRRC Supersport series championships in 2014 and 2017. Imatranajot was a familiar competition to him.

Kallio says that Imatranajoi has an agreement with the IRRC series for the competitions of the coming seasons as well.

Despite the tragedy, nothing is changing.

– It is also worth remembering that events other than the IRRC run in Imatranajoi, Kallio reminds.

Danger will remain an integral part of the sport’s allure, like it or not. That still doesn’t mean that lessons can’t be learned from tragedy.

– We must learn from this unfortunate event. We must do everything we can to never see anything like it again.
