Current smartphones are courting buyers with ever more powerful technology, but they are all very similar in terms of shape and design. But at the MWC 2023, Motorola showed a smartphone that stands out from the crowd. It offers a rollable display.
Motorola already has experience with exceptional smartphones. With the Razr, for example, the company offers a foldable smartphone with the look of the old clamshell cell phones. The model is now even in its third generation. At the Mobile World Congress, Motorola goes one step further and shows a smartphone with a rollable display. The name: Motorola Rizr.
Motorola Rizr – Display rolls out to 6.5 inches
The device is still a prototype. However, this is so mature that the concept and functionality of the new smartphone with a rollable display can already be clearly seen. The Motorola Rizr takes advantage of the flexible POLED displays (Plastic OLED), which are also the basis of the many folding smartphones on the market. Unlike them, however, the display on the Motorola Rizr rolls over the housing and can also be extended if desired. In this way, the available display area can be increased to 6.5 inches despite the smartphone’s compact housing dimensions.
The display can be rolled out by pressing a button, but it can also start automatically in certain application situations. For example, when users open the e-mail program, the display automatically extends to offer more space for writing.
When the Motorola Rizr’s display is retracted, it bends around the bottom edge of the case. The device not only has a screen on the front, but also a small display area on the back. There is also a dual camera at the top. The combination of camera and display on the back allows users to take selfies with the main camera. Alternatively, the Motorola Rizr also has a well-hidden front camera. In order to release it, the display has to be rolled a little further onto the back so that a narrow strip of the case is revealed on the front.
When is the Motorola Rizr coming?
No details are known about the exact technical features of the Motorola Rizr. It is also unclear if and when the smartphone will even be available in stores. It is also possible that the prototype will remain and that it will only be the forerunner for future smartphones with a rollable display.
