Just about everything is ready to make next weekend’s Dam tot Damloop a success. Except for one thing: eighty volunteers are still needed, says organizer Jan Willem Mijderwijk of Le Champion. “The last mile is the longest.”
Just like in recent years, there are various events this weekend: there will be cycling, walking and running. There is also the Mini Dam tot Damloop for children. It is a mega job for the organization, which together needs 1,100 volunteers. The vast majority of this has already been completed. But the last 80 are also necessary, says Mijderwijk.
Ingrid Altena has been helping out as a volunteer at Le Champion events for some time now. At the Dam tot Damloop she walks with a friend on Saturday and on Sunday she will be at the clothing collection. Participants can provide a set of clothes that they can pick up at the finish, so that they do not have to take them with them while running.

“It’s hard work sometimes,” she says. “At the Fjoertoer in Egmond we were handing out Snelle Jelles, and then you immediately encourage people. During the bicycle tour we helped with stamping. Then you see the smiles of those people who were running or cycling at that moment. are… that’s what you do it for.”
Dam run not (yet) in danger
After helping for a number of years, she always meets acquaintances among the volunteers. “It’s really fun, you get to know more and more people. It’s a big group, you’re always ready to chat.” She hopes that there will still be some people who register at the last minute: “It would be such a shame if such an event could not go ahead because there is a shortage of volunteers.”
We don’t have to worry about that for this edition of the Dam tot Damloop. Mijderwijk: “The event will continue as normal, in extreme cases you will have to use temporary workers. But we can only organize the Damloop if we do not let the costs rise too high. If it becomes too expensive, you will not be able to sustain it in the long term. .”
