The Casa Rosada will allocate more than 1.7 million pesos daily to the purchase of breads, croissants and other bakery products, according to a tender promoted by the General Secretariat of the Presidency. According to the media Realpolitik, The process contemplates a contract for six months, with the possibility of extension, and raises the total planned expense to more than $311 million to supply the Executive Branch.
According to the specifications, thousands of units of different products will be purchased, including bread mignon, Arabic bread, hamburger bread and croissants, both butter and fat. The projected volume implies a monthly consumption that would be around $50 million only in croissants, at current market values.
The magnitude of the expense generated questions in different sectors, especially in an economic context marked by the fall in household consumption. Both official statistics and private measurements have been showing a reduction in food purchases, fewer visits to supermarkets and an increase in delinquencies on credits and cards, reflecting a situation of strong adjustment for a large part of the population.
The contrast between the official discourse of austerity and the million-dollar tender to guarantee bread and croissants in the Casa Rosada once again put the focus on the priorities of public spending in a scenario of budgetary restrictions and deterioration of purchasing power.
