In August 2025, the second part of Michael Bully Herbig’s comedy “The Shoe of Manitu” opened in German cinemas. 24 years after the original, the sequel to the “Winnetou” parody, “The Canoe of Manitu,” was released. From January 2nd, “Kanu” will now also be available in stores on DVD, Blu-ray, 4K UHD and as a limited media book. ROLLING STONE is giving away two Blu-Rays of the Herbig film as well as a limited media book. This includes a Blu-ray, 4K UHD and a 24-page booklet with behind-the-scenes photos and an excerpt from “The Canoe of Manitu: The Comedy Book of the Film”.
The “Manitu” success story continues
The second part of Herbig’s comedy was also a cinema success. With 5 million visitors and total sales of 50.7 million euros, “The Canoe of Manitu” is, according to analyzes by “InsideKino”, the most successful German cinema film in 2025. This means that the parody film overtook two Hollywood blockbusters. Warner Bros. Studios’ “A Minecraft Film” had a stronger theatrical release with 1.103 million viewers in the first week compared to “The Canoe of Manitu” with 1.102 million viewers – Jared Hess’ film still only takes second place on the list of the most successful German cinema films in 2025. Garth Edwards’ “Jurassic World – Rebirth” was also only able to overtake the success of “The Canoe of Manitu”. see and takes fifth place in the ranking.
The original drew almost 12 million viewers to the cinemas and is still one of the most successful German productions to this day. With total box office sales of 65 million euros, the sequel cannot surpass the success of “The Shoe of Manitu,” but it clearly follows on from it.
New adventures with Abahachi and Ranger
The Apache chief Abahachi (Michael Bully Herbig) and his blood brother Ranger (Christian Tramitz) once again try to bring peace between hostile parties. But intrigues and old enemies thwart their plans and they end up on a dangerous adventure around the legendary Manitu canoe. They are accompanied by their companion Dimitri (Rick Kavanian) and his new specialist Mary (Jasmin Schwiers), who cause misunderstandings and hurdles.
