Nobody expected this: Taylor Swift reveals details about costumes, partnerships and her relationship with Travis Kelce in her Disney+ documentary.
As a reminder, the first two episodes of Taylor Swift’s documentary series “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour – The End Of An Era” on Disney+ focused on strong emotions, an even stronger mindset, hard work and individuality during the European leg of the tour. These aspects were explained through elements of “The Eras” tour, which grew from the mere idea of a “slightly different” world tour into a cultural phenomenon that thrilled millions of people.
The first two episodes highlighted the conception of the tour, team members, spontaneous set and choreography changes and the so-called “surprise guests” Ed Sheeran and Florence Welch (Florence + The Machine) – surprise guests that the artist brought on stage for performances to the delight of her fans. The insights behind the scenes of the most commercially successful world tour also included the dark and painful chapters such as the knife attack in Southport and the concert cancellations in Vienna.
The strength and professionalism that the artist displayed in the midst of violence and trauma made Swift’s strong character shine through even back then. The artist let the audience believe, night after night, that everything was fine – even though her own world was completely out of control. Her handling of the brutal and unpredictable events made it clear that although Swift is a professional in her field, she is still only human.
90 minutes full of teamwork and surprises
In the 48 minutes each of episodes three and four, “The Eras” tour returned to the USA for its final chapter. The two episodes “Kismet” and “Thanks for the Beautiful Bouquet” from December 19th show how vision became reality, explain the meaning of Taylor Swift’s stage outfits and reveal previously well-kept secrets – when it comes to costumes and partnerships.
A vision became reality
The first shots of the third episode show the young Taylor in reduced image quality – in private photos of the Swift family – as she pursues her fascination with performing in front of an audience. Her mother, Andrea Swift, classified the images and events for the audience: First, Taylor took on roles in the school theater, then she joined a theater group and sang karaoke. As a teenager and young adult, gigs at festivals, amusement parks and bars followed. To do this, the two of them – who have always been like best friends to each other and have been business partners since their breakthrough – took countless trips to different cities.
Andrea, now 67, remembered that her daughter always had a clear idea of what her life as a musician could be like. Swift probably imagined from an early age what her first tour would be like – if she were to be successful in the highly competitive business. Her intrinsic motivation has always been to have the opportunity to sing her own songs. She couldn’t imagine anything more beautiful than having the audience sing the words to her own songs back to her. The aspects of “fame” and “money” were never important in this context.
Years of hard work and tireless perseverance ultimately paid off, as the documentary suggests. Taylor Swift gradually appeared in front of ever larger audiences and in ever larger venues – which sold out more and more quickly. However, no one around her initially expected the success of “The Eras Tour” – not even she herself.
Nostalgia as a concept of the “Eras”
The feeling of nostalgia is one of the main elements of the tour. Swift sees it as her mission to bring back certain feelings and visual impressions that fans experienced at her previous concerts, as she explained in an interview sequence. Costumes are particularly suitable for this, as each of their now twelve “Eras” creates a distinctive look. The stylist Joseph Cassell is partly responsible for this – in any case on tour. He met Taylor when she was 16, combining elegant dresses with cowboy boots because of her country roots.
The two of them’s work is characterized by strong communication through visual language – to this day, Swift uses this method to show him how she imagines her stage outfits. For this tour’s costumes, they worked with big names and long-time collaborators like Christian Louboutin, Roberto Cavalli and Versace to add to the nostalgia factor. The bodysuits of the LOVER “Era” that were reminiscent of “Girlhood” and Barbie, the T-shirts with changing prints from the “22” music video of the RED “Era” and the crop tops combined with miniskirts that characterized the 1989 “Era” – to name just a few.
The power of stage outfits and secrets
A fan favorite was the REPUTATION alum’s red and black catsuit, in which Swift explored themes of betrayal, image, appearances, truth and love. The hand-sequined, asymmetrical suit served as the model for countless costumes worn by fans who tailored, put together or purchased costumes of their favorite “Era” for their concert attendance. Swift revealed that another version of the statement piece was never planned, which probably made many Swifties scream out loud while watching the episode – no item of clothing has been the subject of as many online rumors as the REPUTATION bodysuit.
After the European leg of the tour, however, a replacement was urgently needed as the original and backup were badly damaged during the hundreds of shows. During the tour break between Europe and the USA, the material had to be re-manufactured and a new catsuit had to be made. The stylist had to adapt this under time pressure because it did not fit properly and the manufacturer could no longer change it in such a short time.
In the stage performance section, the artist had to complete strong endurance training. An ill-fitting outfit would pose a challenge, if not even contribute to an increased risk of injury – of which the individual stage elements of the three and a half hour show already had enough in store. This also applies to the costume changes, which had to take place below the stage in just a few minutes to ensure that the performance ran smoothly. The team had to be coordinated with each other and the individual elements of the show like clockwork, otherwise there would have been a high risk of injury for Taylor and her crew due to the moving stage and the pyrotechnics used.

Albums as mirrors and mothers as armor
Swift explained in episode four – during various studio sequences from her eleventh studio album THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT – that each record represents a specific time in her life. For the songwriter, TTPD represents two years of pain and freedom from it. To explain: During the development phase, Swift went through two separations – but she did not mention the names of her ex-partners in the documentary. The “The Eras” tour was a support for the singer in these hopeless times and her personal motivation to get up and keep going. She met her fiancé, footballer Travis Kelce, during her world tour.
To understand: The also 36-year-old wanted to give Taylor Swift a friendship bracelet at one of her concerts in Kansas City in July 2023 – which is inspired by a lyric and became the tour’s trademark thanks to the efforts of fans – with his number on it. The professional athlete failed because the singer did not speak to anyone before and after the show in order to protect her voice. Kelce spoke about the failure with his brother on their sports podcast called “New Heights.” Taylor’s mother noticed, was touched by the gesture, researched him and spoke to her daughter’s conscience. The pop star has so far categorically ruled out athletes as possible partners because they lack similarities.
Little by little, the previous concerns vanished into thin air. The two have more in common than it seems at first glance: their job is to entertain people, albeit in different ways. The locations are also the same – but the stadiums look completely different on Showtime. Over time, Travis Kelce became part of the “Eras” family and a fan favorite. He went from sitting in the stands to appearing on stage with Taylor – supporting the performer at a showgirl skit in London during her song “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.” The two share a passion for their contrasting activities, which they shared from an early age.
Attention: Swift announced via Disney+ that the final episodes 5 & 6 will be brought forward. Instead of on Friday, December 26th – as originally planned – the last two puzzle pieces of “The Eras” tour narrative will appear on the streaming platform on Tuesday, December 23rd. The artist is probably giving the Swifties an early Christmas present.
