Shia LaBeouf pleaded guilty to three counts of simple assault on Wednesday. The charges stem from a late-night brawl the actor instigated during Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans.

The 39-year-old gets away without a prison sentence. Instead, he will receive two years probation for the misdemeanor-level offenses. In a statement to Rolling Stone, his attorney Sarah Chervinsky called the incident “nothing more than a little bar fight at Mardi Gras.”

LaBeouf appeared in court “because he wanted to take responsibility for his part in what happened – and that’s what he did,” Chervinsky continued. “Now he is looking forward to focusing on his family, his work and new creative projects.”

Over the Mardi Gras weekend in February, several videos circulated on social media showing an apparently drunk LaBeouf partying on Bourbon Street. He was arrested during one of his outings – he is said to have “caused trouble” and behaved increasingly “aggressively” in front of a bar near the French Quarter.

Homophobic insults and punches

A topless LaBeouf allegedly punched two people during the altercation and shouted homophobic slurs. A video shows him pushing someone to the ground and punching a man in the face, “possibly dislocating his nose,” the Associated Press reported.

Before the sentencing, LaBeouf was ordered to seek treatment and undergo weekly drug testing. His eccentric behavior had already caused unrest on the set of his upcoming film “The Rooster Prince,” production sources previously told ROLLING STONE. “He was completely out of it,” said a production member who was involved in the Oklahoma shoot last November. “I don’t think he’s stable. I don’t think he has been for a while.”

LaBeouf is also set to star in another film: “God of the Rodeo,” which is co-financed by producer Giannina Facio Scott and her husband, director Ridley Scott, among others. Filming is expected to take place in the region later this month and in July, according to the Oklahoma Film + Music Office.

LaBeouf has spoken openly about his alleged sobriety in the past. In 2020, he revealed he was in therapy and a 12-step program – after FKA Twigs accused him of physical, emotional and psychological abuse during their relationship. As recently as March of last year, he insisted that he was clean and named actors like Mel Gibson and Sean Penn as those who showed him the way back.
