I always call the band as an example of my own career. When I was looking for my first record contract, people didn’t know how they should market me because my sound did not fit in a drawer. But The Band, they played a little bit of everything. I still know when “Music From Big Pink” came out. You couldn’t classify the band’s music, but it was very organic – a little country, a little roots, a little mountain, a little rock – and in singing and harmonies they were different from everyone else.

You are sad, despite the wonderful music when you see “The Last Waltz”. Richard Manuel’s death was really tragic. I later got to know Garth Hudson personally, he played on a demo that I did in the mid -eighties. A very quiet man, very nice. And he played like an angel.
