I always call the band as an example of my own career. When I was looking for my first record contract, people didn’t know how they should market me because my sound did not fit in a drawer. But The Band, they played a little bit of everything. I still know when “Music From Big Pink” came out. You couldn’t classify the band’s music, but it was very organic – a little country, a little roots, a little mountain, a little rock – and in singing and harmonies they were different from everyone else.

As they Bob Dylan Under the name The Hawks accompanied on his 66 tour, the great star of the Rock’n’roll were. The Band enabled Dylan to become more diverse. He moved away from the heavy metaphysical songs on “Blonde on Blonde” and instead wrote cool, small pieces.

You can’t cover your songs – who could imitate Richard Manuel incredibly high voice? – but we tried it. Every time we sucked up and sang, someone inevitably clamped a version of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”.

This guy who tells that his lover has just left him and he is totally destroyed

My favorite song was “it make no difference” by “Northern Lights – Southern Cross”. The feeling behind it is so heartbreaking and the performance is so honest. This guy who tells that his lover has just left him and that he is totally destroyed.

You are sad, despite the wonderful music when you see “The Last Waltz”. Richard Manuel’s death was really tragic. I later got to know Garth Hudson personally, he played on a demo that I did in the mid -eighties. A very quiet man, very nice. And he played like an angel.
