The Special Olympics will come to Drenthe in 2028. Several sources have confirmed this to RTV Drenthe. It is the first time that the games are in Drenthe.
The Special Olympics is a national sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities. The games are held every two years, each time in a different place in the Netherlands.
According to Sport Drenthe, our province is ideally suited to organize a major sporting event. “With its nature and heritage, strong sports infrastructure and experience in organizing appealing events, Drenthe is a unique province to host an event that revolves around sport, fun and inclusion,” Sport Drenthe previously wrote.
About 2,500 athletes and 1,000 coaches are expected to participate in the event. It will be announced later in which places in Drenthe the games will take place.
