Groningen Airport Eelde is the setting for the Royal Air Force’s Moving Werewolf military exercise at the end of June and the beginning of July. Military aircraft take off from the airport twice a day between June 22 and July 6.

During Moving Werewolf, air transports from a fallback base are practiced. This is important in times of war. The Air Force must then be prepared to also use civilian airports if military airfields are disabled.

This year it was decided to hold the exercise in Eelde. This happened in Eindhoven in previous years. At the end of January it was announced that Drenthe airport would be used more often as a fallback and training location for military operations.

During the exercise, C130 Hercules cargo aircraft are mainly used. An F35 may perform a ‘flyby’, during which the fighter jet will fly low over the airport.
