‘Succession’, ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘The White Lotus’ are the main favorites at the gala
The 74 edition of the recognized Emmy Awards, the most important in the television industry worldwide, began this Monday at the Microsoft Theater, located in downtown Los Angeles (California), with all eyes on the series ‘Succession’ and ‘Ted Lasso’.
The ceremony, which return to face-to-face format, began at 5:00 p.m. in Los Angeles (1:00 a.m. GMT on Tuesday) following the usual protocol, with guests and a red carpet, after two editions reduced by the pandemic. However, the coronavirus continues to make a dent because the organizing chain of this edition, NBC, has reduced the capacity and the number of accredited media to avoid possible infections that force the stoppage of ongoing filming, many of which are already months behind schedule. NBC is also responsible for the gala, normally held on a Sunday like the Oscars and the Grammys, moved to Monday to prevent it from coinciding with American football games which broadcasts on weekends.
A drama, ‘Succession’; a comedy, ‘Ted Lasso’; and a miniseries, ‘The White Lotus’, are the big favorites of this edition of the Emmys, although ‘Squid Game’ (‘El Juego del Calamar’, in Spanish) also aims to have a great role. This Netflix fiction, which just a year ago became a global phenomenon, is the first production shot in a language other than English that has managed to access the main categories of the awards of the American Television Academy. For this reason, the ceremony will feature two of its protagonists -and candidates for the award-, Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon, as those in charge of delivering some awards.
Among Latinos, only Guatemalan Oscar Isaac aspires this time to win the Emmy for best actor in a limited series (miniseries) for ‘Scenes from a Marriage’, the modern version of Ingmar Bergman’s classic which has captivated critics. However, the gala will have a Latin presence thanks to the appearance of Ariana DeBose, Diego Luna and Selena Gómez, who will present an award despite the fact that the academics did not nominate her for best comedy actress for ‘Only Murders in the Building’ ( ‘Only Murders in the Building’, in Spanish), a highly criticized decision on social networks.
