The public prosecutor’s office is investigating a criminal complaint from the US electric car manufacturer Tesla alleging unauthorized recording of a works council meeting. The Frankfurt (Oder) public prosecutor’s office announced that an investigation was initiated on Thursday against a representative of IG Metall for breaching the confidentiality of the word and violating the Works Constitution Act. Several media outlets previously reported on this. The union had rejected the accusation against the man.
“He is accused of secretly making an audio recording using a laptop at a works council meeting on February 10, 2026 at the Tesla factory in Grünheide,” the public prosecutor’s office said. The data backup of the laptop, which was necessary for the evaluation, was therefore arranged.
Police operation with criminal complaint
According to factory manager André Thierig, Tesla filed a criminal complaint on Tuesday. The police were alerted. The plant manager said there were “several dozen witnesses in front of whom the IG Metall representative said that he had allegedly forgotten to turn off his microphone.”
IG Metall had spoken of a smear campaign and called the car manufacturer’s claim a lie. An invited union secretary was accused by a works council member of the employers’ faction of recording the meeting on a laptop. According to IG Metall, the trade unionist had no opportunity to refute this.
