In the United States, Tesla is recalling more than two million vehicles due to a defective self-driving system. According to the American regulator, this is the case National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for models S, X, 3 and Y with a so-called autopilot function that were produced between October 5, 2012 and December 7, 2023.
The NHTSA spent two years investigating traffic accidents in which Tesla’s self-driving system played a role. The self-driving function should make driving easier by allowing the driver to drive and brake automatically. But this is often accompanied by an increased traffic risk. Some accidents involving self-driving cars even resulted in fatalities.
According to the Reuters news agency, Tesla has announced that the recalled models will receive new software, which will, among other things, provide drivers with warnings while driving. These warnings should “further encourage the driver to adhere to their ongoing driving responsibility,” the automaker said.
Tesla was also under fire last year because CEO Elon Musk could not fulfill the promise of smart software that would allow the car to drive autonomously.
