Since March it has been calm in the Netherlands when it comes to infections with bird flu, until now. At a chicken company in Gasselternijveenschemond the virus was discovered and thus an uncertain time starts for poultry farmers, says agricultural organization LTO Noord.

“As a sector, we know what to do, but apparently we can’t prevent this,” says Piet Faber of the Poultry Farming sector. According to him, that image also fits in with studies that show that the virus can easily move through the air. “Getver, we’re going there again,” says the LTO leader on Radio Drenthe.

The 71,000 chickens on the company are cleared. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) confirms that, but says that towards the media is not reported when that happens. According to Piet Faber from LTO Noord, that happens as soon as possible. “Sick animals separate a virus. And if you have really sick animals, it is terrible. It sounds very cru. But if life is a burden, death is a solution.”

At the end of the morning, specialists came to the company to prepare the clearance.
