Jule Niemeier was eliminated in the second round of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. The Dortmund native lost to Dalma Galfi from Hungary.

Niemeier led 5: 4 in the tie-break of the second set on Friday (07/07/2023) and had two of his own serves. But the world rankings-126. took both serves from her, won the set and ultimately the match 6:4, 6:7 and 1:6.

In 2022, Niemeier had reached the quarterfinals of the only Grand Slam tournament on grass and had celebrated the greatest success of her career with her first participation. “I’m trying to take this positive feeling with me,” she said before the 2023 edition. It also started well with a surprising win over French Open finalist Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic.

On Friday, however, the dream of participating in the quarter-finals again came to an end after 2:37 hours. The large number of so-called “unforced errors” was also decisive for this. In total, she made 56 of these “unforced errors”.

From the start, Niemeier found no rhythm in her otherwise powerful game, and she regularly slipped up with her forehand. After a break to 2:4, however, she immediately managed the rebreak and then marched through to win the set. Niemeier couldn’t carry the momentum into the second set, in which Galfi injured his left knee in a fall at a score of 3:3, 40:40 and had to be treated for a long time.

However, the Hungarian proved to be a stubborn opponent and used her third chance to equalize the set against the insecure Niemeier. At this point, Niemeier had already made 37 mistakes, and more followed immediately – Galfi managed the break in the first game of the third set, another setback from which Niemeier never recovered.
