Tennis, the ATP 2024 calendar: Olympic tournament in July

There will be 63 tournaments scheduled during the season, with the Internazionali d’Italia confirmed over two weeks. The Asian swing is back, while confirmations are awaited for the Davis Cup and Next Gen

With the first half of the 2023 season still underway, the ATP is anticipating and already revealing its plans for the future by publishing the calendar for next season. There are many confirmations in the 2024 program, such as those of the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid, Shanghai and Rome which will preserve their “Mini-Slam” status, lasting 12 days. The Internationals of Italy, which this year will take place for the first time over two weeks, will therefore return to excite fans in 2024 from 8 to 19 May.

OLYMPICS AND ASIA

In addition to the classic appointments with the Slams, Masters 1000, team competitions and events of 500 and 250 points, the calendar will be further enriched by the Olympic tournament. The appointment, among the most prestigious and eagerly awaited of the season, is set for the end of July (precisely from 27 July to 4 August) and will take place at the Roland Garros facility, just two months away from the French Slam and shortly after Wimbledon. For this reason, with the appearance of the new event, the summer calendar was compressed with the ATP 500 in Washington staged during the same Olympics. After Wimbledon, the 500 in Hamburg and the 250 in Bastad, Gstaad and Newport will also be condensed into a single week (from 15 to 21 July); while on the eve of the Olympic tournament the 250 in Atlanta, Kitzbuhel and Umag will be held simultaneously (July 22-26). In addition to the tennis Olympics, there are several novelties that make their appearance in the ATP calendar. Starting from the Asian season which, after the inconveniences and continuous postponements caused by the pandemic, will return to its regular course with the tournaments in Tokyo and Beijing which will prepare for the Masters 1000 in Shanghai.

DAVIS AND NEXT GEN

Among confirmations, news and returns, however, there are also some small unknowns. Last year Kosmos, the ITF and the ATP issued a joint statement regarding the inclusion of the Davis Cup in the official ATP calendar. However, with the departure of Piqué’s company from the historic team competition, the format devised by Kosmos is currently “awaiting confirmation” in the programming for 2024, with the qualifiers scheduled for February, the Group Stage in the multi- city in September and the decisive stages with the “Final 8” in November. Furthermore, we are waiting to find out what will be the new “home” (and start date) of the Next Gen ATP Finals, a tournament that brings together the best eight Under 21s on the circuit every year and which reached its final in Milan last November its fifth edition.
