Germany’s best tennis player is thrown out early at the ATP Finals. Boris Becker then becomes clear – and receives clear objections.
Alexander Zverev failed in the group phase of the ATP Finals. After the defeat against Felix Auger-Aliassime, Boris Becker was critical – and spoke of a possible “mental block”.
In the decisive group game, Zverev lost against the Canadian 4:6, 6:7 (4:7) and thus missed the semi-finals in Turin. The world number three made several mistakes, especially in the second set. Becker suspects psychological reasons for this: “I’m not a psychologist, I can’t see what he’s like inside. But that had less to do with tennis,” said the 57-year-old on Sky.
Zverev was “almost totally tense,” Becker continued. “He couldn’t handle the pressure, the expectations.” Zverev himself reacted rather irritably to the criticism: “If that’s his opinion. To be honest, I don’t feel like hearing his comments anymore.”
After the lost match, the 28-year-old was self-critical: “That was the worst match I’ve played in the last few months.” He had already conceded the decisive break in the first set with a volley error. After that, the lack of concentration increased.
Despite his return to the top three in the world rankings, Zverev is dissatisfied with his season. The 2021 Olympic champion once again missed out on the hoped-for first Grand Slam title. He was only able to win a title at the home tournament in Munich in April. “I am incredibly dissatisfied,” said Zverev at the end of the tennis year.
