The blue shows off a great performance, cancels set point in the second and gives himself Norrie. These last few weeks could be a sign for Volandri
Lorenzo Sonego wants to end the season on a high note. In Metz, the last tournament of his 2025, the Turin tennis player reached the semi-final: defeated Daniel Altmaier in the quarter-finals with a score of 6-4 7-6 in two hours and three minutes of play. Tomorrow Lorenzo will return to the field to face Cameron Norrie, Alcaraz’s executioner at the Masters 1000 in Paris.
the match
—
Lorenzo Sonego needs a performance of heart, effort and fight, the ones he likes the most, to take home victory number twenty-five of the season. And an 81% first serve percentage made the difference. Altmaier offers only one break point to his opponent in the first set, at 2-2. The blue took advantage of it, broke serve and with an ace canceled out the only opportunity offered to the German to get back into the score. In the second, however, the fate of the match is a continuous unknown. The first to tremble is Altmaier, who is forced to cancel six break points, then it is the number 42 in the world who risks and struggles. Six set points saved by Lorenzo meant a tie-break, where he managed to overcome a mini-break and close his quarter-final. Sonego thus reaches the first semifinal of this season (the last one dates back to August 2024 in Winston-Salem), in a tournament that saw him triumph against Bublik in 2022. And who knows, these last few weeks may not be a signal for Filippo Volandri: until November 17th the Davis Cup squads may have changed and Lorenzo could hope for a turn of events.
