In a press conference at the tournament in Rome, Alexander Zverev looks deep and gives reasons for his long shape low. But he also believes that media often exaggerate.

Before starting at the Masters in Rome, Alexander Zverev said openly about his current form. The Hamburger sees the many stresses of the tennis tour as the main cause.

“I had the feeling that I had burned out a little mentally,” Zverev said on Tuesday before the tournament start in the Italian capital. He emphasized that tennis was a hard sport where a lot is played and traveled. Body and spirit often don’t get a break – and that is exactly what he needed.

In Rome, the 28-year-old (Freilos in round one) starts as the defending champion, but is not one of the favorites after his early end in Madrid. At the tournament in Spain’s capital, he ended in the round of 16 after he had previously triumphed in Munich.

“My game level wasn’t that great in front of Munich,” Zverev admitted. One of the causes was that he did not take a break after the Australian Open. In Melbourne he reached the final in January, but was defeated there Jannik Sinner.

This was followed by a noticeable drop in performance with many early defeats. Despite the difficult phase, Zverev remains ambitious. However, he still has the dream of the top of the world rankings: “I think I can do it. I definitely have the feeling that journalists like to overdo it. After these difficult months, it seems as if I am the worst number two in history.”

Despite the last weaker results, the Tokyo Olympic champion looks a positive way. “I know that I didn’t play on my level, but Carlos (Alcaraz, editor’s note) did not, then he won Monte Carlo,” said Zverev: “I won a tournament two weeks ago, I shouldn’t forget that. You have to keep an eye on the positive. I will find my tennis for the biggest tournaments.”
