Very disappointed, Finn Stam left the field around 10 p.m. after the 2-3 loss against NAC. Shortly afterwards, the Jong AZ captain looked back on the result, his favorite position and making his debut in the Alkmaar main force. “The trainers give me the feeling that I am close to it.”
“This sucks,” Finn Stam doesn’t beat around the bush. De Zaankanter thought that his team Jong AZ deserved more. “We didn’t have to lose this pot to NAC, but we made the mistakes ourselves and they were a bit lucky.”
Trainer Leeroy Echteld positioned Stam as a midfielder, while the 20-year-old talent is actually a defender. “That is a fantastic challenge for him,” said Echteld. The coach of the Alkmaar talents also had to make room for defenders such as Denso Kasius, Alexandere Penetra, Maxim Dekker and Gonçalo Esteves. And that meant that Stam had to move forward one line.

“He must continue like this and I think he is close to a debut,” Echteld says about possible minutes for Finn Stam in AZ 1. “It is up to him, but he must above all keep his emotions under control. It is a temperamental boy.”
Stam himself is also keen on a debut in the team of head coach Maarten Martens. As a Zaankanter, he lives close to the club and went through the entire youth academy. “It’s something I think about every day and I just have to keep going. Hopefully my chance will come soon.”
