Teatro alla Scala: “Don Carlo” opens the season (all star) 2023-2024

The first appointment of a program rich in quantity (14 operas, seven ballets, seven symphonic appointments, plus extraordinary concerts, guest orchestras, recitals and “treats” for children) and in quality: from Kirill Petrenko to Esa-Pekka Salonen to Christian Thielemann, of the great no names are missing. «More stars than in the sky» was the motto of Metro Goldwyn Mayerbut in this case we could appropriate it…

The works

The new layout of the Don Carlo has been entrusted to the Spanish director Lluís Pasqualon the podium Riccardo Muti, Don Carlo is Francesco Meli, Philip II René Pape, Rodrigo Luca Salsi and Elisabetta di Valois will be embodied by the still undisputed prima donna of our era, Anna Netrebko. Among the other original productions, to be noted at least Medée by Luigi Cherubini directed by Damiano Michieletto, supported by his experienced team (Paolo Fantin for the sets, Carla Teti for the costumes, Alessandro Carletti for the lights), a second Verdi drama on power: Simon Boccanegradirected by Lorenzo Viotti, Das Rheingold according to David McVicar, he directs Christian Thielemann, today Wagnerian conductor par excellence. Unmissable as well Der Rosenkavalier in a version already seen at La Scala, but with the awaited debut of Petrenko, the director of Berlin Philharmonic.

The ballets of the Teatro alla Scala

For the ballet season it starts on December 15 with the Under30 preview of Coppelia in choreography by Alexei Ratmanskyfollowed by the resumption of Medina with Roberto Bolle (who will also be in La dame aux camélias). Among the titles The history of Manonbut also absolute novelties such as Smith/León and Lightfoot/Valastro and the classic La bayadere, however in an unpublished staging by Luisa Spinatelli. It’s a Gala dedicated to the memory of Carla Fracci.

The concerts

For concerts, to the usual appointments with the Filarmonica della Scalathose with guest orchestras are added: first of all the one with the Philharmonia Orchestra (on the podium Esa-Pekka Salonen) and the one with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and its outgoing conductor: Riccardo Muti. For the cycle “Great pianists at La Scala”here it comes Daniil Trifonov, Hèléne Grimaud, Beatrice Rana, Maurizio Pollini and Alexandre Kantorow. But there will be – among the extraordinary concerts – also Martha Argerich. For singing recitals, you are spoiled for choice: from Juan Diego Flórez to Lisette Oropesa, from Roberto Alagna to Rosa Feola.

For the younger ones

As usual, attention and care also for the program aimed at the youngest: two works (The little Prince, The little chimney sweep), the concert of the Labéque sisters with The carnival of animals by Camille Saint-Saëns e But Mere l’Oye by Maurice Ravel (reciter Alessandro Baricco) and the series of Amazing Adventures of Lalla & Skali and…an interactive show that stimulates children’s imagination and love for music.

To remember – in 2024 – too the celebrations of the Teatro alla Scala for the centenary of the death of Giacomo Puccini with two new productions of The swallow (directed by Irina Brook) e Turandot (directed by Davide Livermore, with Anna Netrebko). Plus November 29 – the exact day of the anniversary – an extraordinary concert directed by Riccardo Chailly with Anna Netrebko and Jonas Kaufmann. Top!
