Tatjana Maria is also in the round of 16

Tatjana Maria created the sensation and, like Jule Niemeier, reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon. The German beat an absolute top player.

After Jule Niemeier, Tatjana Maria is also sensationally in the round of 16 at Wimbledon. The 34-year-old prevailed 6: 3, 7: 5 against world number five Maria Sakkari from Greece and now meets Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. Sakkari is the sixth top 10 player to get caught in one of the first three rounds.

Maria follows Niemeier

Tatjana Maria had never gotten past the third round in her previous nine attempts. In the second set, Maria made up a 5-2 deficit against Sakkari, who was number five, and used her second match point after 90 minutes. Previously, Jule Niemeier had already reached the round of the top 16.

After the game, Maria, a mother of two, was visibly moved – and shed tears of happiness during the after-match interview. “It’s difficult to find words. I was happy to even be in the main draw. I love playing on grass and Wimbledon. Being able to experience all of this with my family here on site is just pure joy,” says Bad Saulgau woman.

From a German point of view, Angelique Kerber and Belgium’s Elise Mertens as well as Oscar Otte and fifth-placed Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz will still be dueling on Friday evening. Both games take place on the covered Court No.1.
