Rising prices
A study commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture shows that veterinary rates have risen to three times faster in recent decades than inflation, NOS reports. Since 1998, veterinarians have been able to determine their prices themselves and in practice it appears that commercial chains in particular high amounts. Those who come to a chain in an emergency will pay an average of 40 percent more than with an independent veterinarian. This often concerns hundreds or even thousands of euros. Outgoing State Secretary Rummenie calls that development ‘worrying’ and wants more transparency.
Animal food bank
In addition, the daily costs for food can also increase considerably. According to a survey by NVP and Dibevo, owners spend an average of almost € 57 per month on animal feed. For some families that is a heavy burden. The animal food bank therefore sees that it is getting busier. On Dierendag that becomes extra visible: where some people spoil their pet, others fight for filling a bowl of food at all.

Choices
For pet owners with a small budget, this can lead to painful choices. Postponing or skipping a necessary treatment is harmful to the animal, but sometimes the only option for the owner. Insurance can cover part of the costs, but it also does not offer full certainty and is not cheap.
