This weekend it is busy in ‘t Straatje, the famous entertainment neighborhood near the Station of Kortrijk. After the spiking affair that caused unrest in recent months, the managers seized the new season to start a clean slate. With extra measures and a charter drawn up together with the city, police and brewers, the neighborhood must become safer and more pleasant than ever.

“I am convinced that the street is safer than ever,” says Dieter De Clercq of CafĂ© 56. “A lot of agreements have been made with the police. I see it going well. I have a lot of faith in it.”

The joint charter includes agreements about, among other things, training for staff, responsible alcohol consumption and respecting the age limits. A strong focus is also on a woman -friendly entertainment climate. Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe emphasizes: “Under those conditions, going out in the street can happen in a safe way.”

To reinforce the revival, an outdoor party and various activities were organized this weekend. Young people show themselves enthusiastically and leave the past behind. A visitor summarizes it like this: “There have been bad stories about spiking, but everyone keeps coming. Everyone believes in it.” Another adds: “I come from Waregem and come here super. It must remain witty for everyone here.”
