Syrian President Assad Supports Russian Invasion of Ukraine | Abroad

Assad wanted to seize the moment to reiterate Syria’s position on the “special operation”. Moscow consistently speaks of a special operation in Ukraine rather than a war.

Assad arrived late Tuesday evening in the Russian capital Moscow for an unannounced visit.

After laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin, he met with Putin on Wednesday. He thanked Russia for its help after the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey in February.

Putin and Assad last met in September 2021, when the Syrian president also traveled to Moscow. Russia has been a key ally of the Syrian president since the start of the civil war in Syria in 2011.
