Sydney FC ended the collaboration with the former Bayern professional Douglas Costa prematurely. The Australian record champion terminated the contract with the 35 -year -old offensive player. “Current legal and personal matters in his home country prevent the Brazilian from departing,” says a message from the association in which the German Alexander Baumjohann works as a sports director. Costa was granted more than two months to clarify his problems. However, the professional informed his club that there was no end in sight.

“I would like to thank Sydney FC for giving me the opportunity to play in Australia – it was an incredible year,” the veteran was quoted. “I am very sorry that because of the affairs I have to clarify at home, I can’t currently return, but I will always be happy to remember my time in Sydney.”

Head coach Ufuk Talay explained: “Douglas offered us some entertaining performances here during his season, and I would like to thank him for his commitment and quality, which he brought into the team. We have supported him in the past few months to solve his problems, but we agree that this is the best way for the team to prepare for the coming season.” According to reports, Costa has been arrested for outstanding maintenance payments and is therefore not allowed to leave his homeland in Brazil.

The attacker had joined the Sydney FC in August 2024 after his contract termination at Fluminense, for whom he came to 25 missions with six goals and eight templates. Most games in his career made Costa for Shakhtar Donetsk (203), followed by Juventus Turin (103) and FC Bayern (97). In summer 2015, the Munich team transferred 30 million euros for him to Donetsk.
