“THEor did you know that Sweden is the first country in the world that doctors can prescribe?”so says the commercial Visit Sweden. And, apparently, it’s not just a slogan. With the project The Swedish Prescriptionthe Scandinavian nation transforms its lifestyle – made of nature, silence and well-being rituals – in a real one treatment for body and mind. It’s not about pills, but about authentic experiences: silent woods, traditional saunas, dawn walks and the ritual coffee break called cool.

A recipe for happiness (approved by science)

In the video of the promotional campaign, a woman in a white coat, stethoscope around her neck, immerses herself up to her waist in a frozen lake and calmly explains: «A classic sauna activates the parasympathetic nervous system for deep relaxation». Then he smiles and adds: «Or do you prefer nightlife? Here the sun doesn’t set for 100 days. Imagine what light therapy can do for you.” An ironic tone, but a serious message: Sweden wants to demonstrate, with the help of real doctorswhich iContact with nature and local culture can really improve health.

Research and studies on well-being related to life in Sweden

The initiative was born from research by Professor Yvonne Forsell of Karolinska Institutetaccording to which to spend a period immersed in the Swedish lifestyle – among forests, lakes and socializing slow – reduces stress, pressure and insomnia. Visit Sweden collaborated with four international experts (da United States, United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands) to identify five activities in nature that promote well-being – such as forest bathingpicking berries and mushrooms or observing the sky – e three daily habits that rebalance life: the coolthe sauna followed by a swim in the lake or a simple walk in the woods.

Friluftsliv And lagom: well-being according to the Swedes

In the Land of 100,000 lakesfrom the 5,700 nature reserves and of 265,000 islands, the freedom to explore nature is guaranteed by the Constitution thanks to the right ofallemansrätten: the ability to move freely, sleep under the stars or swim in any lake.
This is where the concept of friluftsliv – literally “life in the open air” – a philosophy that invites you to disconnect from the daily frenzy and find balance in contact with nature. And then there’s the lagomthe art of perfect balance: neither too much, nor too little. A true lesson in moderation which, according to the Swedes, is the key to living more harmoniously and happily.

Sweden, a place that heals

In reality, the idea is not entirely new: doctors were already prescribing in the 19th century trips to the mountains or stays in the salt mines to treat respiratory disorders. The Swedish Prescription updates that concept in a modern key, transforming travel into a form of preventive medicinewith a touch of Nordic irony. And the numbers confirm the interest: the Global Wellness Institute estimates that wellness tourism will reach i $2.1 trillion by 2030. Between saunas, forests and cinnamon sweetsSweden already seems like the most “healing” destination in the world.

How to get a prescription from your doctor

The modus operandi It’s simple: anyone can download the “prescription” form from the official website of Visit Sweden and take it to your doctor.
If the professional is in favor, he can recommend a therapeutic stay in Swedenpersonalized with activities such as forest bathing, cold dives after the sauna, cultural events or days of complete relaxation immersed in nature.

Limits, criticisms and sustainability

Naturally, this “recipe for well-being” does not cover travel costs: transport, accommodation and activities remain the responsibility of the patient.
It’s one symbolic prescriptionwhich however encourages treating the stay as a real therapy: digital disconnection, slow living, local food and moments of introspection. Some critics argue that the initiative risks seeming like a “good story” designed only for those who can afford it. But for promoters, the value lies elsewhere: raise awareness of the link between nature, health and happinessand inspire a new way – more natural and inclusive – of taking care of yourself.
