Escape to Southern Europe for a few days during the bleak winter months. It is a regular occurrence for many amateur teams in Drenthe. However, for SVZ from Zeijen, the trip to Lisbon took a surprising turn. Due to snowfall, the Sunday second division team could not land at Schiphol on Monday.
And that means that the teams are stranded in the Portuguese capital. “We are now stuck here with 19 men,” says captain Gerard ten Brink. “We weren’t prepared for that at all, but we’re still having fun.”
Last Monday the selection was told that flying back to Schiphol was impossible. “A few boys were able to arrange another flight, but most boys can only fly back on Saturday. At a good time too, five o’clock in the morning,” ten Brink sighs.
But anyone who follows the news knows that more snow will probably fall in the Netherlands during the week. And that has also been heard by ten Brink.
“I hear stories about 20 to 30 centimeters of snow,” he says. “I honestly have no illusions that Schiphol has enough snow plows to allow us to land in that case.”
