At the start of the year, 1. FSV Mainz 05 is setting further personnel foundations for the relegation battle in the Bundesliga.

1. FSV Mainz 05 started the new year with a new coaching team. At the start of training on Monday (January 1st, 2024), ex-professional Niko Bungert and Sören Hartung were assistants for the first time Jan Siewert, who was promoted to permanent head coach shortly before Christmas, is on the pitch.

Bungert played a total of 218 competitive games for Mainz between 2008 and 2019 and served as Achim Beierlorzer’s assistant coach for the 05ers in the 2019/20 season. The 37-year-old most recently represented Rheinhessen as a club ambassador and also completed his coaching training.

The previous U17 coach Hartung also has experience in his new role. He worked alongside current sports director Martin Schmidt in the Bundesliga from 2015 to 2017.

The Mainz team is flying to Marbella, Spain, this Tuesday for a six-day training camp. In the first competitive game after the winter break, the table 16, which is in danger of relegation, hosts. on January 13th VfL Wolfsburg.
