Successful launch of SES’s fifth and sixth O3b mPOWER satellites

SES today announced the successful launch of two additional O3b mPOWER satellites at 4:08 p.m. local time aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) in Florida, USA. Following the launch of the fifth and sixth O3b mPOWER satellites, the system now has the required six satellites in Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) to deliver high-performance network services that combine high throughput, low predictable latency, and unparalleled flexibility and availability.

Last month, SES announced that it would add two additional Boeing-built satellites to the O3b mPOWER constellation, bringing the fleet to a total of 13 satellites. This additional investment should be financed from SES’s existing capital expenditure. The first four O3b mPOWER satellites, launched last year, have reached their final orbital position and are currently undergoing orbital checks, including a series of validation tests of the space and ground segment systems.

So far in 2023 alone, SES has deployed and tested 160 O3b mPOWER terminals in addition to the existing O3b constellation to serve customers in the mobility, telecommunications, government services and enterprise sectors.

“Now that the fifth and sixth O3b mPOWER satellites have been launched and will become operational within the next few months, we are preparing to provide our customers with the high-performance connectivity services they need. Increased network resiliency keeps us safe “We can provide our customers with the reliable and secure connectivity they need to run their businesses,” said Ruy Pinto, CEO of SES.

Commercial O3b mPOWER services are expected to begin operations in the second quarter of 2024. To find out more about O3b mPOWER, visit our newsroom.
