In an attractive DFB Cup semi-final, Stuttgart and Leipzig fought an exchange of blows. In the end, ripped off Swabians prevailed.
In the end, his bright smile had given way: RB Leipzig failed in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup under the eyes of Jürgen Klopp and the debut of the new coach Zsolt Löw. At VfB Stuttgart it set a 1: 3 (0: 1) defeat for lawn ball. So while the Swabians dream of the DFB Cup victory, Leipzig’s goal for Leipzig burst in the competition in four years.
VfB put a lightning start into the game: After just five minutes, Angelo Stiller put the hosts in the lead with a remarkable direct acceptance after a corner. However, Leipzig did not let himself be shocked and subsequently took command, but could not take advantage of his chances. Riped off Stuttgart, this was punished: They also started in the second half better and it was Nick Woltemade, who increased to 2-0 in the 57th minute. Benjamin Šeško gave the Leipziger hope again with his connection goal five minutes later. But Jamie Leweling poked the ball over the line in the 73rd minute and put the lid on for Stuttgart.
In the final of the DFB Cup, the Swabians will now meet Arminia Bielefeld as a clear favorite on May 24th. The third division team had sensationally prevailed against defending champion Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday.
The long-time assistant coach Zsolt Löw had revealed him “healthy excitement, healthy tension”, had revealed him before the kick-off at Sky. Some displeasure is likely to have been added, because the challenge of the cup semi-final was even greater after just a few minutes.
VfB got a dream start when the hosts’ first corner led to a goal of the “goal of the month” brand. Middle Leaders of Stiller, half -right, hit the gate by a famous volley from around 18 meters. Leipzig’s cup goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt was surprised and did not react.
The collective cheers at the Swabians were contrasting to the serious expressions of RB soccer boss Jürgen Klopp, the technical director of RB, ex-VFB striker Mario Gomez and RB supervisory board head Oliver Mintzlaff on the stands. At the side of Klopp, Zsolt Löw will return to his role as chief strategist in the RB cosmos after the end of the season.
With increasing the course of the game, the Leipzigers were increasingly recovering from the early goal. Loïs Openda forced VfB national goalkeeper Nübel in three scenes. And Xavi Simons also came to a promising conclusion. Klopp was carried away by the game, and again and again he rose from his place.
“Of course you notice both teams that it is about insanely a lot, about moving into the final,” former national coach Joachim Löw described the game during the half-time break at Sky.
The game continued with intensity even after the change of sides. After a double pass with Ermedin Demirović, U21 national striker Woltemade underlined his top form that has been ongoing for weeks. But only five minutes later Šeško made it exciting again. Löw drove his team on the edge of the field. Leweling then poked the ball on the line.
