According to the Utrecht Student Corps, there has been an upward trend in the work of the lifeguards: “The past season did not give rise to discussion about behavior or social unrest.”
It’s about saving people
Nevertheless, a proposal was adopted last night in the Texel municipal council to cancel the collaboration. There is no more trust, says Eric Hercules of the PvdA: “With extra effort and extra rules, it remains to be seen whether a day will ever come that leads to a cultural change at the Utrecht Student Work Camp.”
Hercules says that the issue has stirred up a lot among the Texel population: “Without accusing people, you should be able to swim safely on the beach, no matter who is there. You should not have to check whether they are OK in terms of social behavior. It is about saving people.”
