At the mayor’s request, the police will continue to carry out regular checks. If there are violations, the business will be fined or, if necessary, temporarily closed. “We also want to take preventive action with stricter regulations. We want to monitor the image of the offer in our city. Moreover, it would not be right for the many hardworking entrepreneurs who do adhere to the rules,” says Mayor Ruth Vandenberghe.

For example, the opening hours in the tourist center will be adjusted to a maximum of 11 p.m. Night shops may only be open between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. Every entrepreneur who wants to start a new such business in Kortrijk must also apply for a business permit. The city will then assess whether it is desirable for such a business to open at the requested location. In addition, a one-off establishment tax of 5,000 euros is imposed at the start-up and an annual operating tax of 1,800 euros. The operators of the businesses are also screened for an operating permit.
