Streich: Cologne icon Jonas Hector “would have been a real Freiburger”

Praise from the SC coach

At 1. FC Köln, Jonas Hector became one of the 20 most-used players in club history. Before the 32-year-old defender, who ended his career in the summer, left SV Auersmacher for the cathedral city in 2010, the path could have led to SC Freiburg. There, coach Christian Streich expressed his high regard for the Cologne icon.

Hector is “a great footballer, a great captain,” said Streich. He revealed that the sports club was once interested in the native of Saarbrücken. Hector is a footballer where you can say: “That would have been a real Freiburg player from what he exudes.”

Streich emphasized before the Breisgauer Bundesliga game on Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) in Cologne that he fully understands when a player says: “That’s enough.” Being a footballer is a wonderful job, but if you’re in has been in the sport for a long time and, like Hector, is broadly positioned at the same time, there are good reasons to say: “Now I’m leaving this football, now I’m going to do other things.”
