Lars Stindl will wear the Borussia Mönchengladbach jersey for the last time on May 27th. In the summer, the 34-year-old is drawn back to Karlsruher SC. But the longtime Gladbach captain certainly has a place in the history books.
“It’s definitely going to be very emotional. I just let myself be surprised by what’s happening. I’m still only feeling anticipation, but in the next few days I’m sure there will be melancholy,” said the eleven-time international in the “kicker”.
Stindl came to the Lower Rhine from Hannover 96 in 2015 and has worn the colts’ captain’s armband for the last seven years. Record! A circumstance that makes him “mega proud”. It is very special to be the captain of such a traditional club for such a long time.
Stindl reveals: “A title with Borussia – that would have been it!”
However, Stindl already regrets one thing when he looks back on his time in Gladbach. He never won a title with the club.
Even if he thinks there were a few chances: “Lost in the 2017 cup semi-final against Frankfurt on penalties. A month earlier we lost in the Europa League against Schalke. We were twice the clearly better team and are eliminated after two draws . That’s still hard for me to grasp today.”
“A title with Borussia – that would have been it,” summarizes the native of Speyer.
In addition, Stindl is probably one of the few who mourns the 2018 World Cup debacle. Stindl missed the tournament in Russia due to a syndesmosis ligament rupture: “If you’re not a world-class player but, like me, just a very good Bundesliga player, then you only get this chance once in your life. 2018 was my big chance, because everything was fine then, too by winning the Confed Cup a year earlier. Being eliminated from the World Cup was really painful. Being able to play a World Cup for Germany is the greatest.”
