Steven Berghuis responds to messages after Maurice Steijn’s dismissal: ‘I now have broad shoulders’ | Dutch football

Steven Berghuis’ name was mentioned frequently this week after the departure of Maurice Steijn as head coach of Ajax. The attacking midfielder is having a hectic week. “Also because I became part of it.”

According to reports, Steijn The Telegraph Berghuis as a disruptor and therefore wanted to say goodbye to him in case he himself remained coach of Ajax. “I also received that, not from Maurice himself. I was brought to Ajax two years ago. Not only because of my footballing qualities, but also because of my personality. Apparently Maurice had a little more difficulty with that,” Berghuis responded to Veronica.

“I think so too The Telegraph a number of people have not spoken. Then you hear a different sound. But I know how it works in football,” Berghuis continued the 2-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. “I am who I am and I am proud of that. It will always remain that way. I am someone who always strives for the highest. I wouldn’t do it the way Maurice would have done it. I would just tell it openly and honestly.”

Berghuis therefore indicated that he never heard anything from Steijn: “I think he only told The Telegraph. I never heard it from him myself. But it must be the case,” said Berghuis, who did not feel the need to contact the departed coach to ask what is true of the story. “If he had felt the need to tell me then he would have done that. I saw him on Monday, but heard nothing.”

If you wear the Ajax shirt you can never refuse work, I just fell in bad

Steven Berghuis

Berghuis came on in the 59th minute in the away match against FC Utrecht (4-3 defeat) last weekend. After a very mediocre raid, the word ‘refusal to work’ was even mentioned: “Those are quite statements,” Berghuis responds.

“If you wear the Ajax shirt you can never refuse work, I just fell in badly. I had just gotten fit and would play a maximum of twenty minutes. In the end it was 38 minutes in which I simply played very poorly. There are examples where my transition is not good, but there is also an example where I lose the ball and run all the way after Bozdogan. So yes, those are dangerous things for imaging, but you have to deal with them. Meanwhile, I have broad shoulders and just wasn’t ready for that match. I blame myself for that and I am the first to do so.”

Despite the hectic week, Berghuis tried to focus on the away match against Brighton: “You get back to business as usual with someone new for the group and you try to make a good plan, but such a good team came still too early for us.”
